Getting into the backcountry offers a chance to get away from the rat race and be alone with nature. While getting up close and personal with nature can be an awe-inspiring experience, hauling sleeping, cooking, and hiking gear on your back can be painful. Thus, you should try to cut weight where you can. One way to keep weight down is to look for a lightweight stove.

Solid-Fuel Stoves

Solid fuel stoves come in a few different varieties. For example, you could have a foldable wood-burning stove. If you use such a stove, you don't have to worry about hauling fuel in with you. On the other hand, you may have difficulty finding fuel in your location, and such stoves can be subject to fire bans. A second option is to look for stoves that will burn fuel tablets. Such tablets will not burn for long and may only be good for boiling water, so you want to make sure that you pack food such as freeze-dried meals that will only need a little boiling water to be ready to eat.

Pop-Can Stoves

Another option to consider is a pop-can stove. Such stoves will burn rubbing alcohol, which is easy to buy. If you go on a long trip with a stove that uses fuel canisters, you may have difficulty buying the type of canisters that your stove uses. On the other hand, you can buy rubbing alcohol at any grocery store you find along your way, and it will be much cheaper than buying fuel canisters. Alcohol stoves are also good for boiling, and they can help you get water to boil faster than tablet stoves, so they will help you to get to your dinner quickly. The best part is that a pop-can stove is much lighter weight than other stoves on the market. On the other hand, you will want to make sure that you know how to use your stove and that you are comfortable using it before you trust your stove out on the trail.

Buying camping gear depends on the type of camping that you want to do. If you buy a pop-can or solid fuel stove, it will not work to cook bacon and eggs at your next family reunion, but it will be the perfect kind of stove to use to get out into the backwoods and get back to basics.
